Celebrate World Environment Day 2025 with Zipit

Every 5th of June, millions of people around the world take time to focus on the environment. World Environment Day is a global call to action, rallying us to take better care of the planet we all share. From school projects and beach clean-ups to international corporate campaigns and government policy initiatives, it is a day when attention turns to the natural world and the many, all-too-real challenges it faces in the 21st century.

This year, the focus is on something we all encounter daily: plastic. The theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” highlights one of the most persistent and damaging threats to the world’s ecosystems. Plastic production has skyrocketed since the 1950s, and today, over 430 million metric tonnes are produced annually. Two-thirds of that becomes waste, much of which ends up in rivers and oceans, and even our food.

At Zipit, we are surrounded by nature every day. Tall trees, leafy trails, and the ambient sounds of forest life create a fantastic environment where our visitors can unwind, challenge themselves, and reconnect with nature. Given how close this subject is to our hearts, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating World Environment Day! Mark the occasion with a visit to one of our Forest Adventure Parks in Ireland.

Assorted single-use plastic items, including cups, plates, cutlery, straws, and bottle caps, are scattered on colored plastic bags—highlighting the urgency for change by 2025 and reflecting on the spirit of World Environment Day.

Understanding the Global Impact of Plastic Pollution

It’s easy to think of plastic pollution as a problem that happens elsewhere, affecting landfill sites, rubbish islands in faraway oceans or distant developing cities. However, the truth is that plastic pollution is having an effect everywhere. You can find it on hiking trails, tangled in hedgerows, and floating down local rivers. Tiny plastic fragments, known as microplastics, have been discovered in Antarctic snow, the deepest underwater trenches in our seas, and even, unbelievably, throughout our own bodies!

This issue goes well beyond what is visible to the eye. Plastic takes centuries to break down, which means that every bottle cap, food wrapper, or disposable fork that isn’t properly disposed of can remain in the environment for generations. Wildlife often suffers the consequences. Seabirds mistake plastic for food, fish ingest it, and animals can become trapped or injured by it.

Globally, more than 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year. In Ireland, the Environmental Protection Agency reports that around 60 per cent of litter found on Irish beaches is plastic. This is more than just a nuisance; it poses a threat to biodiversity, water quality, and long-term sustainability.

The 2025 campaign by the United Nations calls for more substantial commitments from governments and industries to reduce plastic production and improve waste management. However, it is not just about policy changes. Individual choices matter too. Your choices matter. We can opt for reusable options over disposables, refuse unnecessary packaging, and support companies that prioritise sustainability.

At Zipit, we believe that even small actions can make a difference, especially when they begin with awareness.

Zipit’s Ongoing Sustainability Efforts

Being located in the heart of the forest makes us acutely aware of the importance of protecting the environment. Our team witnesses first-hand what a healthy natural space looks like and understands how quickly that balance can be disrupted if waste is not managed properly or if people forget to treat the forest with care.

At all of our parks, whether you are zipping through the trees in Tibradden Wood, Farran Forest, Lough Key, or Djouce Par, we encourage visitors to leave no trace. Our equipment and infrastructure are designed for durability and reliability. Platforms are built with sustainable materials, courses are integrated into the forest without harming root systems or surrounding growth, and we minimise single-use plastics in our daily operations. We hired our own dedicated Sustainability Officer for this purpose.

However, it is not just about our internal practices, it is also about the inspiration we provide. Whether it is school groups learning about the forest, families picking up eco-friendly tips from our team, or visitors simply observing how an outdoor adventure park can operate with minimal impact, we hope that every visit plants a seed of awareness.

How Visitors Can Take Part in World Environment Day 2025

You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle to make a difference. In fact, one of the key messages of World Environment Day is that small steps taken by many can have a meaningful impact.

If you’re visiting Zipit around the 5th of June, get in the spirit and follow these simple steps:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic.
  • Take your rubbish with you, or use the bins provided.
  • Carpool, cycle, or use public transport if possible; fewer cars mean fewer emissions.
  • Keep your picnic waste-free by packing in reusable containers and cloth napkins.
  • When exploring in the forest, stay on marked paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and follow the guidance on respectful forest use.

For families, this is also a great opportunity to talk to kids about caring for the planet in ways that are clear, hands-on, and positive. When children feel part of something bigger, they’re more likely to carry those habits forward. A walk through the forest, a chat about plastic waste, and a moment to stop and listen to birdsong. Sometimes being proactive and encouraging is all it takes.

World Environment Day is, at its heart, an invitation to celebrate your love for nature. It’s a prompt to think not just about the future we want, but about the role we can play in shaping it. At Zipit, we’re lucky enough to work in some of Ireland’s most beautiful natural spaces. That’s not something we take for granted.

So, whether you’re visiting us for an Irish Forest Adventure this June or planning an adventure later in the year, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating not just the forest, but the bigger idea behind it: that time spent in nature is always time well spent.
