Birthday Parties in Roscommon

Outdoor adventure parties at Lough Key Forest Park

The Destination Birthday Party

Lough Key Forest Park, in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. The only outdoor adventure birthday party venue west of the Shannon.

For families in Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, or anywhere across the west and midlands, this is the option that doesn’t require a two-hour drive to Dublin. Your group gets three hours of ziplines, high ropes, and forest challenges in one of Ireland’s most beautiful forest parks.

Minimum age: 7.

ZipIt Lough Key sits within the 350-hectare park, which means a birthday party here can become a full day out. Walking trails to explore before or after. A visitor centre with café. The lake itself. Some families arrive in the morning, do ZipIt, have a picnic, explore the park, and don’t leave until late afternoon.

The “destination birthday” angle works well for families who want the party to feel like an event rather than just an activity. The setting delivers that.

What's Included in a Party Booking

Full session (3 hours)

Access to all six circuits, from beginner-friendly green to the advanced red course, within your allotted session time. Kids can repeat their favourite circuits or work their way through everything at their own pace.

Safety briefing (30 minutes)

Harness fitting and instruction for everyone. Kids pick it up quickly. Our instructors are used to working with birthday groups and keep the briefing engaging.

Harnesses are provided for everyone. Gloves are available to purchase on the day. Just bring comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Trainers are fine. No party shoes, sandals, or flip-flops.

Picnic area

Tables and benches for food, cake, and presents after the session. You bring everything; we provide the space. There’s a cabin on site selling drinks and snacks if you need extras.

Adults included

Parents, guardians, and accompanying adults are all welcome to take part. Standard adult pricing applies when booking.

The Day Out Birthday

Lough Key works differently from our other locations. It’s not a quick activity in a car park. It’s a destination.

Sample full-day itinerary:

9:40am: Arrive at Lough Key Forest Park in the car, park and walk to the ZipIt cabin. Guests gather while you check in.

10:00am: Everyone gets fitted with harnesses. This takes about 15 minutes for a group of 10 to 12 kids.

10:15am: Group safety briefing. Our instructors explain the circuits, demonstrate the safety equipment, and answer questions. About 20 to 30 minutes depending on group size and age.

10:45am: Onto the circuits. Everyone starts on green, getting a feel for the course before progressing through the colour-coded circuits at their own pace. Some push on to the higher levels quickly. Others take their time and enjoy every element. Parents are welcome to follow them around or wait on the ground.

12:30pm: Most kids finishing up. Harnesses off. Everyone migrates to the picnic area.

12:45pm: Food, cake, presents, photos. Take as long as you need.

1:30pm onwards: Head home. Tired children. The best memories.

You can adjust timings to suit. Afternoon parties work just as well. The session length stays the same. For families coming from Galway, Sligo, or further afield, the full-day format makes the journey worthwhile. The kids get more than just a party; they get an adventure.

The Only Option in the West

If you’re in Galway, Sligo, or the midlands, the alternatives for outdoor adventure birthday parties are limited. Drive to Dublin (2+ hours) or Wicklow (2+ hours). Or settle for indoor options locally.

Lough Key changes that. Galway is 75 minutes away. Sligo is 40 minutes. Athlone is 50 minutes. Close enough for a day trip, special enough to feel like an event.

The forest park setting matters too. Other birthday venues are industrial units with equipment inside. This is 350 hectares of woodland, a lake, and mountain views. Parents appreciate the difference. Kids remember it.

For older children especially, the setting adds to the adventure. They’re not at a party venue; they’re in a forest, completing circuits that span clearings and climb into the canopy. That distinction makes the birthday feel significant.

Duration: Plan for 3 to 3.5 hours total.

Before and After ZipIt

The forest park has more than ZipIt:

Walking trails: Multiple routes through 350 hectares, from 30-minute loops to longer hikes.

Lough Key Experience: Viewing tower with panoramic views. A quick add-on after ZipIt.

Boda Borg: Puzzle-based team challenges. Good for groups wanting a second activity.

Boat trips: Seasonal trips on the lake.

Café: The visitor centre has food and drinks.

For birthday parties, the walking trails and viewing tower are the most popular additions. A walk after lunch extends the day without additional cost.

Questions Parents Ask

Is it worth the drive from Galway?

Yes. Galway is 75 minutes from Lough Key. The forest park setting and full-day potential make it worthwhile.

What's the minimum age?

7 years old. For younger children, our Djouce Park location in Wicklow has a junior course for ages 3+, but that’s further from the west.

Can adults join in?

Parents and accompanying adults are welcome to take part. Standard pricing applies.

What about rain?

We run in rain. Forest canopy provides cover. Bring waterproofs. Kids don’t mind getting a bit wet; parents might want to dress appropriately too.

Can we use the forest park café?

Yes. Or bring your own food for the Zipit picnic area.

Is there coach parking?

Yes. Let us know in advance for larger groups.

Teenage Birthday Parties

For groups aged 10 to 16, Lough Key delivers genuine challenge. The black circuit (twenty metres, long ziplines) becomes the goal. Competition between friends adds energy. The forest setting makes it feel like a proper adventure.

For 13+ groups, parents can drop off and collect. Younger groups need at least one adult on site.
